Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has hailed the "glorious" victory of Peter Magyar in the parliamentary elections in Hungary, considering it an important moment for European unity.

In a reaction published on the social network X, Tusk declared: "Hungary, Poland, Europe united again! Glorious victory, dear friends!", while also adding the Hungarian phrase "Ruszkik haza!" ("Russians, go home!"), signaling his stance against Russian influence in the region.

Magyar's victory comes against the outgoing prime minister, Viktor Orbán, known for his nationalist policies and close relations with Moscow. Tusk sharply criticized this closeness, underlining the need for a stronger orientation towards the European Union.

The election result is seen as a potential change in Hungary's political direction, paving the way for a more pro-European approach and a distancing from Russian influence in its foreign policy.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat in Sunday's election, ending his 16-year rule. In a speech to supporters, he called the result "clear and painful" and thanked the roughly 2.5 million voters who voted for his Fidesz party.

As the BBC writes, Orbán vowed to "rebuild communities" and stressed that "we never give up."

Meanwhile, the opposition led by former Orbán ally Péter Magyarka scored a landslide victory. With around 60% of the votes counted, his Tisza party is expected to secure a two-thirds majority in parliament, giving it the opportunity to overhaul Orbán's key power structures.

Magyar confirmed that he received a call from Orbán, who congratulated him on his victory. This development marks a major turning point for Hungary and is expected to have repercussions across Europe and beyond.

Let us recall that these elections had a record turnout and were seen as decisive for the future of Hungary and Europe.

Orbán's defeat is also a blow to his close allies, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
