Former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Brennan has joined growing calls for the president's removal from office, arguing that the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution, which deals with involuntary removal from office, was "written with Donald Trump in mind."
Brennan, who led the agency during Barack Obama's presidency, told MS Now on Saturday that Trump's recent comments about the destruction of Iranian civilization and the danger it poses to many lives justify his departure from the White House.
“This person is clearly unstable,” he said. “I think the 25th Amendment was written with Donald Trump in mind.”
Brennan added that Trump poses a major risk to continuing as commander-in-chief, having at his disposal extraordinary military power, including the US nuclear arsenal.
The former CIA director's comments put him at the center of a growing debate over Trump's decision to go to war with Iran and his increasingly harsh threats to inflict mass destruction on the country. On April 7, the president warned that Iran's "entire civilization" would "die tonight" if the Iranian regime did not meet his ultimatums, a threat that Brennan said implied the possibility of using nuclear capabilities.
As Trump has ratcheted up his aggressive rhetoric, a growing number of Democrats have called for the activation of the 25th Amendment. This mechanism, included in the US Constitution in 1967, allows the vice president and a majority of the cabinet to remove the president if he is deemed “unfit to discharge the duties and powers of his office.”
According to a recent count by NBC News, more than 70 Democrats in Congress have called for the implementation of this amendment.
However, the likelihood of this happening remains very low, due to the strong support Trump continues to have from his Vice President, JD Vance, and the entire Cabinet. Despite this, concerns about the president's increasingly harsh language and extreme threats are expected to persist, especially after the failure of peace talks between the United States and Iran on Saturday and the possibility of a resumption of hostilities.
Brennan's statements are particularly significant given that he himself is under investigation by the US Justice Department as part of the Trump administration's crackdown on perceived opponents. Under pressure from the White House, the department in July placed Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey under criminal investigation.
Two months later, Comey was indicted on two counts of lying to Congress during his 2020 testimony about the Russian election interference investigation. A judge dismissed the case.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Brennan continues. In March, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Trump ally Jim Jordan, declared that the investigation was “intensifying.”
