Merz calls Trump: Tensions with Iran should not affect NATO's future
Merz & Trump

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the war with Iran has tested NATO's resilience, describing the situation as a "test of endurance" for the alliance.

Merz stressed that he does not want the current tensions to further strain transatlantic relations. He announced that he discussed the future of NATO with US President Donald Trump during a phone call on Wednesday and proposed continuing these discussions before the alliance's summit, which is expected to be held in Ankara in July.

" It is my steadfast intention to do everything to preserve NATO's defense for Europe, including the United States ," he declared, adding that there is currently no alternative to this alliance and that it must be preserved and further developed in cooperation with Washington.

At the same time, the German Chancellor expressed concern about Israel's military actions in southern Lebanon. He warned that the intensity of the operations could harm peace efforts in the region.

According to him, Germany and other international leaders have urged Israel to stop further escalation of attacks. In parallel, the German Foreign Minister has held two talks with his Israeli counterpart.

Merz also announced that the German government will resume contacts with Iran, in coordination with the United States and European partners, with the aim of supporting the peace negotiation process.
