Germany criticizes Israel's attacks on Lebanon, Merz: Peace process is at

Following the agreed ceasefire in the Middle East, the German government is resuming talks with the Iranian government. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the aim is to contribute to the success of upcoming negotiations between the US and Iran to end the war in the region.

He also expressed his readiness, after the US-Iran agreement, to provide the necessary assistance to secure the Strait of Hormuz.

"A window of opportunity for a negotiated solution is now opening, but the situation remains fragile. The German government intends to continue to support the diplomatic process and is prepared to stabilize a peace, if it succeeds. After a peace agreement, Germany could also help ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. However, this requires a mandate and a workable plan ," Merz said.

Merz announced that he will speak to the Pakistani Prime Minister by phone later today. In addition, a negotiating team has left for Pakistan to hold talks with Tehran.

On the other hand, Merz criticized Israel's behavior in the war in Lebanon, emphasizing that the brutality with which they are attacking could disrupt the negotiation process.

" The brutality with which Israel is waging war there could derail the entire peace process. And that must not happen ," said Chancellor Friedrich Merz, adding that he and other heads of state had yesterday urged the Israeli government to stop its intensified attacks.

Merz said they viewed the situation throughout the region with great concern, but with particular concern the situation in southern Lebanon.

Despite a ceasefire in the Iran-Iraq War, Israel bombed multiple targets in Lebanon on Wednesday in its clash with the Hezbollah militia, including the capital, Beirut.
