The situation in the Western Balkans and the joint engagement in this region will be one of the topics of the summit between the United States and the European Union that takes place today in Washington.
Sources in Brussels confirmed this for Radio Free Europe, saying that in the consultations with the American partners, the Western Balkans was also mentioned as a topic of the summit.
However, diplomatic sources said that it is not expected that the leaders of the US and the EU will devote much time to this topic at the summit, since there they will discuss the two biggest crises in the world at the moment, namely Russia's war against Ukraine and the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militants of Hamas. Likewise, attention will also be paid to trade relations with China.
However, the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia - which is mediated by the EU and supported by the US - the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the general situation in the Western Balkans are topics that require the joint care of Washington and Brussels.
One day after the summit in Washington, the visit of the US envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, with his colleagues from Germany, France and Italy will start in Kosovo and Serbia. The visit of international representatives aims to revive the dialogue for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
In the EU, they say that it is extremely important that the US supports the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, but also the EU's leading role as a facilitator in this process.
The US-EU summit is the first to take place in more than two years.
