UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has stated that countries around the world are determined to use "every possible diplomatic, economic and coordinated measure" to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Cooper says more than 40 countries have come together to support the reopening of this vital waterway. The strait has been virtually closed by Iran, which is putting significant pressure on global supply chains and energy prices.
Cooper has repeatedly condemned Iran's "reckless" attacks on international shipping and added that Iran is seeking to hijack the global economy.
She further explained that the attacks are affecting mortgage rates and petrol prices in the UK, as well as jet fuel around the world, fertiliser for Africa and also gas for Asia.
Cooper says her job is to make decisions in the UK's national interest and that the best thing for the cost of living in Britain would be for the conflict to end.
The Foreign Secretary also added that measures could include working with the International Maritime Organization to ensure that the first stranded ships can resume movement. According to the United Nations, about 2,000 ships remain stranded in the Persian Gulf.
