Italian Senator Terzi: Reza Pahlavi linked to regime, artificial support
Italian Senator Giulio Terzi

Italian Senator Giulio Terzi di Sant'Agata has cast strong doubt on Reza Pahlavi's claims to lead Iran's political transition after the fall of the current regime. Speaking at the "Free Iran 2025" World Summit and in subsequent public statements, Terzi has questioned Pahlavi's legitimacy, real support, and independence from the repressive structures of the Iranian regime.

According to Terzi, the narrative that Pahlavi is a unifying figure for the Iranian people is artificially inflated. He refers to a Financial Times investigation that suggests that the growth of Pahlavi’s following on social media, especially on Instagram, has been driven largely by fake or automated accounts that share almost identical promotional content. This, according to the senator, raises serious doubts about the authenticity of his support, both inside Iran and in the diaspora.

The main support for Pahlavi appears to come from segments of the Iranian diaspora, fueled by a nostalgia for the Shah's era. However, Terzi and other observers remain skeptical about the real impact of this support on the ground inside Iran, where the protests are driven by demands for secular democracy and a rejection of any form of authoritarianism.

One of the most critical points concerns Pahlavi's alleged ties to elements of the current regime's security apparatus, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Terzi recalls that the European Union, with the support of Italy, has designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization. In this context, he expresses concern about statements attributed to Pahlavi, according to which the latter has admitted to contacts with the IRGC and considered it necessary to maintain order after the fall of the regime.

Citing the book Countdown to Collapse: Iran's Regime on the Brink by Struan Stevenson, Terzi underlines that describing forces like the IRGC and Basij as "brave men" is an insult to thousands of Iranian families who have suffered from repression, arrests and killings by these structures.

"The Iranian people reject both the current theocracy and the past monarchy. Any transition linked to the repressive structures of the regime risks betraying the sacrifices of the protesters and reproducing new cycles of authoritarianism instead of bringing the freedom and democracy sought ," Terzi warns.
