The White House has informed Congress that it wants to send more than $1 billion in weapons to Israel. The new package will include tank rockets, mortars and armored tactical vehicles.
Last week, President Joe Biden said he would freeze arms shipments to Israel if it launched a military incursion into the town of Rafah.
On Tuesday, Israeli tanks advanced deeper into the residential areas of southeastern Rafah, as heavy shelling took place in several areas.
Biden said last week that he had delayed sending the 900 kg bombs to Israel because of how they could be used in such a ground operation.
The package being sent to Congress is the first since the Biden administration banned arms transfers to Israel last week.
According to the Associated Press news agency, it will include $700 million in tank ammunition, $500 million in tactical vehicles and $60 million in mortar shells.
On Friday, a US State Department report revealed that some American-made weapons that were given to Israel may have been used in violation of international law.
Arms transfers to Israel have become a political liability for Biden ahead of this November's 2024 White House election.
