The United Nations has turned its attention to the situation in Ukraine.
The UN said in a statement that it is deeply concerned about the plight of civilians in Ukraine, particularly in the Kharkiv region, as Russian forces step up attacks.
"This attack has captured more Ukrainian territory, caused further displacement and potentially threatens Kharkiv," the statement said.
Data from the UN shows that since the last incursion by Russian forces on May 10, at least 6,000 people are believed to have fled or evacuated from border areas, with many reaching the city of Kharkiv.
"In the Kharkiv region, the situation is dire, as the fighting intensifies. Colleagues in Kharkiv report that air raid sirens sound almost constantly and they hear explosions in the border area and in the city itself. Reports indicate that in the northeastern border town of Vovchansk, where there has been significant destruction, heavy fighting is continuing. "Several hundred civilians out of a population of around 3,000 before May 10 are believed to still be there," the statement added.
At least 8 civilians have been killed and 35 injured in the Kharkiv region since last Friday.
