The US changes position, plans to send long-range missiles to Ukraine

US President Joe Biden plans to send long-range missiles to Ukraine to help Kiev counter-offensive against the Russian army, US media reported.

They have quoted several US officials familiar with the matter as saying that Ukraine will receive some ATACMS missiles with a range of up to 300 kilometers.

Something like this would allow Kiev to attack Russian targets in areas much deeper than the front line.

At least one Ukrainian missile struck Russia's Black Sea fleet on Friday, namely in Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014.

A source within the Ukrainian military has told the British broadcaster BBC that the attack on the port in Sevastopol was carried out using Storm Shadow missiles, which have been sent to Ukraine by Britain and France, highlighting the importance of Western weaponry in this war.

However, none of the leaders have confirmed the US media reports.

What is known is that the American Abrams tanks will arrive in Kiev next week.

When Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the war in Ukraine in February 2022, the Biden administration was reluctant to supply Ukraine with modern weapons.

But its stance has changed over time, as Kiev now has advanced Himars missile systems, and the Patriot air defense missile system.

Biden has so far been hesitant about long-range weapons, saying such missiles could pit the US directly against nuclear-armed Russia. /REL
