The ousted leader of the Turkish opposition, Ozgur Ozel, gathered thousands of supporters in Ankara today, despite the court ruling that removed him from office and dealt a heavy blow to the political opponents of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

After his speech at a rally that, according to the Anka agency and opposition media, gathered tens of thousands of participants, Ozel led a march in the center of the Turkish capital.

Last week's court ruling annulled the 2023 congress of the Republican People's Party (CHP), effectively returning former leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who was defeated by Erdogan in the presidential election that same year, to the party leadership.

This development could further strengthen Erdogan's position and increase his chances of extending his more than two-decade stay in power.

On Saturday, Kilicdaroglu visited CHP headquarters for the first time since the court ruling, promising to purge the party of corruption. He referred to investigations related to opposition-run municipalities.

The party's current leaders have rejected the charges, arguing that they are politically motivated, a claim the Turkish government denies.

While Kilicdaroglu spoke at the party headquarters, Ozel addressed an even larger crowd outside the CHP offices in Ankara. He declared that the court ruling did not legitimize his rival's leadership and called for a new party congress to be held immediately.

He then led a peaceful march to the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey and the CHP itself.

The protest was also attended by Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavas, who is considered one of the figures who could compete for the leadership of the opposition against the imprisoned Istanbul Mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu. The latter remains Erdogan's strongest political opponent.

Yavas also called for a new congress to be held, while Kilicdaroglu stated that it would be held "as soon as possible," without giving a specific deadline.
