At least eight students and a teacher have been killed and several others injured in a gun attack at a school in southern Turkey, according to Interior Minister Mustafa Cifci.
The incident took place at the "Ayser Çalik" high school in the Kahramanmaraş area, where, according to authorities, 13 people were injured, six of them in critical condition.
The suspected perpetrator, a 14-year-old student at the school, was also killed. He is believed to have entered two classrooms armed with five guns and seven magazines. According to local governor Mukerrem Ünlüer, the guns belonged to his father, a former police officer, who has been arrested.
The motive for Wednesday's attack remains unknown, while authorities have launched an investigation. In some released footage, people are seen jumping from first-floor windows and running away from the school premises during the shooting.
“The sound of the gunfire was very loud,” said one journalist, also describing the panic outside the school. After the news spread, many worried parents gathered in front of the building.
"My child saw everything and said to me: 'Dad, my friend got hurt,'" one parent told AFP, adding: "How am I going to take my children to this school again?"
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reacted through a post on the X network, wishing "a speedy recovery to the children, families and teachers."
The incident comes just a day after another similar incident in the south of the country, where 16 people were injured when a former student opened fire at a high school before killing himself.
