A powerful explosion rocked the Italian capital today, causing the collapse of two buildings and injuring at least two people.
The incident occurred at around 1:00 p.m. in the Piana del Sole area, southwest of Rome, between Via Tavagnasco and Via Castellinaldo. According to preliminary information, the explosion is suspected to have been caused by an LPG gas cylinder, although the exact causes are yet to be confirmed.
The force of the explosion was immense, causing the total collapse of two buildings, while several others nearby suffered significant damage. Images posted on social media show destroyed structures, while debris damaged vehicles and shattered windows in nearby homes.
It is reported that four to five other buildings were also affected, with damage ranging from minor to severe.
So far, two seriously injured people have been confirmed, both elderly, who were pulled from the rubble and rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
"I saw a woman lying on the ground shaking," a witness from the scene said.
Meanwhile, emergency teams continue search and rescue operations, as there is a suspicion that other people may still be trapped under the rubble, given that the buildings were inhabited at the time of the explosion.
Firefighters, 118 ambulances, police and carabinieri, as well as special search and rescue units, including teams with trained dogs, were deployed to the scene.
Authorities say the explosion almost completely destroyed the walls of the buildings and was felt over a wide area.
Investigations continue to uncover the full causes of the incident, while the main clue remains the explosion of a gas cylinder inside one of the apartments.
