Two foreign tankers carrying fuel were attacked overnight in Iraqi waters of the Persian Gulf, causing fires to break out on both vessels. One crew member has died and several others are missing as a result of the incident.

According to the director of the Iraqi Port Authority, Farhan al-Fartoush, authorities have so far managed to evacuate 38 crew members from the ships involved in the incident. Search and rescue operations are continuing to find people who may be left at sea.

Footage broadcast by the Al-Ikhbariya television network showed one of the ships at sea, shrouded in thick smoke and flames. In a statement accompanying the footage, the television reported the death of a sailor from one of the ships, citing official Iraqi sources.

Authorities have not yet provided details on how the attack occurred, while the identities and flags of the ships involved have not been made public.

The incident follows previous reports that three ships were attacked in the same area. In one of these cases, a tanker caught fire, forcing most of the crew to abandon ship for safety reasons.

Recent incidents have raised concerns about the security of maritime transport in the Persian Gulf, one of the most important global corridors for the transport of energy and fuels.
