Several people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, with at least eight reported casualties after shelling hit the coastal area of Beirut, far from Hezbollah's main stronghold, which has been the main target of Israeli operations.
According to Lebanese authorities, powerful explosions were recorded overnight in several parts of the capital. The sound of shelling was heard particularly in Dahia, south of Beirut, an area known as a Hezbollah stronghold. Due to the intensity of the attacks, thousands of residents have fled the area.
Some of the airstrikes also affected other areas of the city, including the Corniche coastal promenade, in the Ramlet al-Baida area.
Lebanon's Health Ministry said at least eight people were killed in an attack that is believed to have directly hit a vehicle. A second attack was also reported as people gathered to help the wounded, causing additional casualties.
Meanwhile, the situation in the region remains tense. Israel has warned that it may intensify its bombing campaign against Hezbollah, while the Lebanese Shiite organization said it had fired more than 100 rockets towards the city of Haifa and other areas in northern Israel.
