Scenarios for a powerful earthquake in Turkey have returned to the spotlight, following the warning of Turkish geoscientist Professor Naci Görür, who has been speaking for years about the risk of a major earthquake in Istanbul and the surrounding region.
Through a post on social media, Görür stated that scientific data shows that a major earthquake is expected in the northern segment of the Marmara region.
The reason for his reaction was the 3.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the Ayvacık area of Çanakkale province yesterday evening. In a post on the X platform, the professor drew attention to the tectonic activity in the region.
Görür said: " Twelve hours ago, a small, shallow earthquake occurred in the Küçükkuyu rift. This area, considered the southern branch of the North Anatolian Rift (NAF), shows that the Marmara region continues to be under tension. We expect a major earthquake to occur in the northern branch of this rift in the near future ."
On the other hand, a significant number of seismologists emphasize that seismic energy has long been accumulated in the still unruptured segments of the North Anatolian Rift, under the Sea of Marmara.
Seismological studies support estimates that, especially the northern segment of this rift under the Sea of Marmara, has the potential to cause a major earthquake in the future.
