US President Donald Trump has announced that he will immediately end all trade negotiations with Canada. The decision came after an advertisement aired in the neighboring country used the voice of former US President Ronald Reagan to criticize trade tariffs.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the action "outrageous behavior" and said that "all trade negotiations with Canada end immediately."
Most recently, the president has imposed a 35% tax on Canadian imports, with exceptions for products included in the USMCA agreement with Mexico and Canada.
Trump accused the Ontario government of trying, through the ad, to "interfere" with an upcoming decision by the US Supreme Court, which is expected to rule on the legality of global tariffs imposed by Washington.
The one-minute ad featured excerpts from a 1987 Reagan speech, in which he warned that trade tariffs hurt every American and could trigger bitter trade wars.
Meanwhile, the Ronald Reagan Foundation responded by saying that the Ontario government had used "selective audio and video" without permission and that it was considering legal options against the use of the material.
