
Greek police authorities have arrested two doctors and 7 other people in Chania, Crete as they are investigating a case of baby trafficking.
According to Protothema.gr, the case concerns illegal adoptions of babies and their replacement.
Investigations are carried out by the Directorate of Organized Crime Prosecution based in Athens, with the assistance of the Chania police authorities.
Those arrested have a long career in the field of medicine, while more arrests of other people in the same hospital are not excluded.
How the scheme worked
A gynecologist, she is the "brains" of the baby trafficking network that was based in Chania.
According to information from protothema.gr, the 73-year-old woman, who is a legal representative of clinical fertility, allegedly, in cooperation with the employees of the center she ran, had set up a "front shop" for the sale and trading of babies, selling every child out of 70 000 to 120 000 euros.
Their client list included childless couples, same-sex couples, or single men who wanted to become parents. As well-informed sources explained to protothema.gr, those who wanted to buy a child had virtual cohabitation with the women used by the county as surrogate mothers, the women gave birth to the children and then gave them up and divorced.

9 arrests after the scandal
For this case, the authorities have already proceeded to arrest nine people. Specifically, six people were arrested in Chania, two in Athens and one in Thessaloniki.
The two arrests in Athens involve a Romanian woman, an associate of the ring, and a woman who had given birth to a child and intended to go with the first arrested to Thessaloniki to deliver to a couple.
