German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has refused to fall prey to speculation about Wagner's uprising and said the West's goal was to help Ukraine defend itself from aggression, not bring about regime change in the Kremlin.
Asked if he had hoped the rebellion would end Putin's rule, Scholz said that would make no sense as it was unclear whether the successor to the current leader would be any better.
" The Wagner Corps is a military unit that is operating very aggressively around the world, and very specifically in Russia's war against Ukraine ," Scholz said.
The German chancellor, however, said he believed the failed rebellion had weakened President Putin.
"I believe he has weakened as it shows that the autocratic power structures have cracks in them and he is not as firmly in the saddle as he always claims ," Scholz told German broadcaster ARD.
