Thousands of flights across the US have been canceled or delayed as the Northeast braces for a severe winter storm during the peak holiday travel season.
By Friday evening, 1,600 flights across the US had been canceled and 7,400 were delayed, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.
The airports most affected are John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia, all of which serve the New York area. Boston, Chicago and Toronto, Canada, are also affected.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning from 4 p.m. local time (21:00 GMT) Friday until 1 p.m. Saturday, with up to 9 inches (23 cm) of snow expected in New York and southern Connecticut.
JetBlue Airways had canceled 229 flights, while Delta Air Lines canceled 241 flights. Republic Airways and Southwest Airlines canceled 180 and 151 flights, respectively. About 100 scheduled flights by American Airlines and United Airlines were also canceled.
On social media, airports were warning travelers to check with their airline to determine the status of their flights.
The heaviest snowfall was expected between 6:00 p.m. local time (23:00 GMT) and midnight. Drivers were warned of hazardous conditions and advised to carry an emergency supply kit.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said people should avoid unnecessary travel, but if they must travel, they should "plan ahead, take it slow and leave plenty of time to get where they need to go safely."
There were similar warnings from the governors of New Jersey and Connecticut.
This will be the second significant snowfall this season for New York City, which was covered with several inches on December 14.
Mayor Eric Adams urged people who drove to work on Friday to leave early or consider public transportation home.
Snowplows were deployed and ready to begin clearing the streets as soon as five centimeters of snow had accumulated.
