Bad weather hits Germany

Germany is expecting heavy snowfall of up to 20cm, while record winds of more than 210km/h left almost 400,000 homes in France without electricity.

Northwestern Europe is being battered by storm Goretti. As of Friday afternoon, no major or widespread damage had been reported in France.

France's national meteorological service, Météo-France, had issued severe weather warnings urging residents to stay home.

Winds of 213 km/h and 216 km/h were recorded overnight in Gatteville and Val-de-Saire in Normandy.

Wind speed records were also broken in Brittany, and a gust of 148 km/h (92 mph) was recorded at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. More than 380,000 homes, mainly in Normandy and Brittany, were left without power by lunchtime on Friday.

Regional train services were suspended across northwestern France on Friday morning, with disruptions expected to last at least until late afternoon, although TGV high-speed rail services were operating and no serious flight delays were reported.

Schools remained closed in the north of the country and weather warnings were issued in 30 other regions. "Find shelter and do not use your vehicle," warned the Manche prefecture in Normandy, urging residents to prepare emergency lights and drinking water.

The worst of Elli, as Germany calls the storm front approaching the country, was expected to arrive later on Friday with strong winds, heavy snowfall and temperatures likely to drop to -20 degrees Celsius in certain areas.

Deutsche Bahn halted long-distance rail services in much of northern Germany after the national weather service DWD warned of ice and snowfall that would make many roads impassable.
