Meloni 'betrays' Trump: If the US intervenes militarily in Greenland,
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Trump

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has dismissed the possibility of a US military intervention in Greenland to take control of the Arctic island.

Meloni said that such a scenario would not be supported by her if it were carried out by the US administration led by Donald Trump.

According to her, the idea of a military intervention has been ruled out by both US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Trump himself.

The Italian newspaper La Stampa reports that Meloni sees Washington's stance more as a political signal about the strategic importance of the region.

"I do not believe in the possibility of the US taking military action in Greenland, which I would not support and would not be in anyone's interest. The possibility of an intervention to take control of Greenland has been ruled out by Rubio and by Donald Trump himself. I believe that the Trump administration, with its very determined methods, is drawing attention to the strategic importance of Greenland for its interests and security. It is an area in which many foreign actors operate and I believe that the message from the US is that it will not accept excessive interference by foreign actors," she stressed.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told US lawmakers that President Donald Trump wants to buy Greenland from Denmark rather than take the Arctic island by military means, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Rubio reportedly made the comments during a briefing after the Senate's top Democrat, Chuck Schumer, asked whether Trump was planning to use the military in places like Greenland and Mexico.

Trump, who initially expressed his intention to purchase Greenland during his first term in office, has linked ownership of the strategically located island to national security and competition with Russian and Chinese navies.

“President Trump has made it clear that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority for the United States and is vital to deterring our adversaries in the Arctic region,” said White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt. She added that using the military is “always an option available to the commander in chief.”
