Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, described the meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in St. Peter's Basilica as a historic moment and a gift from Pope Francis.
"I think it was a beautiful moment, and from what the protagonists told me, it may have even represented a turning point. Perhaps Pope Francis' last gift to all of us. I think he deserved a grand and peaceful funeral, as he was, and I think that in that face-to-face confrontation was, I don't know how to say it... his soul," Meloni said.
Focusing on the recent US-EU "clashes" due to Donald Trump's customs tariffs, Meloni said that the time has come for a real agreement between the Union and the US.
"For meetings to bring results, time is needed, they must be carefully prepared, they must not be formal, but substantive. Today the time is not yet ripe. Of course, there is the 90-day suspension of obligations, there are deadlines, but I am interested in bringing a real agreement to the country that serves Italy first and foremost, as well as Europe and the US," she said.
Asked about the Italian position regarding a possible peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, she emphasized:
"What we have had since the beginning of the Russian aggression: to stand by Ukraine, which, without Western support, would not have been able to defend its freedom. We now support Trump's efforts and are happy that Zelensky has expressed his readiness for an unconditional ceasefire, demonstrating that Ukraine also wants peace."
