While the whole world was watching the Donald Trump-Volodymyr Zelensky meeting at the Vatican, before the start of Pope Francis' funeral ceremony, the first reaction came from Vladimir Putin.
Putin has sent a coded message to the two leaders who discussed the Russia-Ukraine peace agreement in St. Peter's Basilica.
According to Russian media, he has declared that the Nazi regime in Kiev is nearing its end, implying that he will not accept an agreement on US or Ukrainian terms.
"The complete defeat of the enemy in the Kursk border region creates conditions for further successful actions of our troops in other important areas of the front and brings the defeat of the neo-Nazi regime closer," Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, according to the Tass agency.
On Friday, before departing for the Vatican, Trump said that a peace deal for the war in Ukraine was very close. “Things are going well and I think we will ultimately make very good deals, including on tariffs and trade,” Trump said.
"We're going to make our country rich, but we're going to try to get it out of war and be able to save 5,000 people a week, that's my goal. I mean, 5,000 young guys. Most of them are Ukrainians, Russians. It's 5,000 young Ukrainian and Russian guys and that would be a great honor if I could do it. I think we're very close," Trump added.
After the meeting with Trump, Zelensky himself reacted.
He said that it was a very symbolic meeting that has the potential to become historic.
