Tanks move towards the Strip, UN calls on Israel to stop

Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israel's plan to "liberate" Gaza from Hamas, emphasizing: demilitarization, Israeli-controlled security, aid corridors, and a non-Israeli civilian administration.

The prime minister claims the war could end "tomorrow" if Hamas hands over its weapons and releases its hostages. Meanwhile, according to Gaza authorities, Palestinian deaths have surpassed 61,000 since the start of the conflict. Today, 17 people died, including 11 waiting in line for humanitarian aid.

Israeli news site Ynet reports that reports have been circulating in the Gaza Strip of "a surprising advance by IDF tanks towards the Morag Corridor area," which separates Khan Younis from Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. Gazans are said to have fled the area.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with US President Donald Trump, his office announced, Ynet reports, specifying that the two discussed Israel's plans to capture the remaining Hamas strongholds in Gaza to end the war by freeing hostages and defeating Hamas. The prime minister also thanked Trump for his unwavering support for Israel since the beginning of the war.

On the other hand, Hamas sharply criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying that during today's press conference he told a "series of lies" when describing his vision for victory in Gaza. "Netanyahu continues to lie, deceive and try to deceive the public. Everything Netanyahu said in the press conference is a series of lies and he fails to address the truth and distorts reality," said Taher al-Nunu, media advisor to the head of Hamas' political bureau.

Meanwhile, according to military sources, the IDF is still assessing how many troops it will need for the planned offensive against Hamas in Gaza City, the Times of Israel reports. The same sources say it could take at least another week to finalize the general outline of the plans, and by then, the IDF will know how many troops it will need and for how long. However, they explain, it will be necessary to recruit reserves for the offensive itself or to replace the army’s permanent forces on other fronts.

The UN has opposed Israel's plan for Gaza, calling it another dangerous escalation.

"The latest decision by the Israeli government risks triggering another terrible chapter in this conflict. This is another dangerous escalation of the conflict," said Miroslav Jenča, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, during the Security Council meeting.

According to him, "The United Nations has been adamant: the only way to end the immense human suffering in Gaza is a comprehensive, immediate and permanent ceasefire."

"There is no military solution to the armed conflict in Gaza or to the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict," he said.
