Fire engulfs ferry with 155 people on board near the coast of Capri

A fire broke out in the engine room of the Raffaele Rubattino ferry, which is currently located northwest of the island of Capri, about 15 miles from the port of Naples. The ship remained at sea for a short time until Coast Guard patrol boats arrived on the scene after the captain's accident. According to reports, the fire is under control and no injuries have been reported. There are 155 passengers and crew members on board. The ferry departed from Palermo this morning and suffered a breakdown in the Bay of Naples, a few miles from the city.

The Raffaele Rubattino is a passenger ferry operating between Palermo and Naples for Moby Lines. Tugs have arrived and started towing the ferry towards the port, while the Port Authority has asked other vessels in the area, in particular the GNV Auriga, also from Palermo, to join in if assistance is needed. The ship's captain informed authorities that there was no need to evacuate passengers, so towing operations began immediately after the tugs docked. "The fire was quickly extinguished by the crew. There were no injuries," the official statement said.

"The ship is arriving at the port of Naples with the assistance of two tugboats," according to a statement issued by Tirrenia. It is estimated that it will take around four hours to reach the port.
