The British warship HMS Prince of Wales has been photographed for the first time leading one of the most powerful fleets in recent history, on a mission that could bring it into conflict with China's military forces, writes the Daily Mail.
The 65,000-ton ship, the largest ever built by Britain, has arrived in the Mediterranean, accompanied by eight other ships from the British and allied fleets. The escort includes the nuclear submarine HMS Astute, the battleship HMS Dauntless, the anti-submarine frigate HMS Richmond, and two supply ships, RFA Tideforce and RFA Tidespring.
The formation was also enriched by the participation of the Spanish frigate Méndez Núñez, as well as the Norwegian ships HNoMS Maud and HNoMS Roald Amundsen. The British fleet will conduct exercises and operations with allies in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Asia and Australia until December.
The "Operation Highmast" mission, led by Commodore James Blackmore, involves 4,500 British personnel and marks the second deployment of the Carrier Strike Group (CSG). En route, it is expected to pass through the Red Sea, where Yemen's Houthis have attacked shipping - and possibly even the Taiwan Strait, a move that could provoke China.
On board are 18 F-35B fighter jets, anti-submarine helicopters and state-of-the-art drones. The ship's commander, Captain Will Blackett, declared: "We are ready for any scenario - this ship represents British naval power at its best."
The operation aims to send a clear message about the UK's determination to defend the international order and allies in the Indo-Pacific.
