This Sunday, Pope Francis called for a ceasefire in the Middle East, which has been mired in a grueling and deadly war for a year.
The Pope said that the military actions of each side affect Palestinian, Lebanese and Israeli civilians who have been living under the terror of war for months. Francis called on everyone to reach an agreement and negotiate peace diplomatically, as all nations have the right to exist in peace.
" Tomorrow, Monday, it will be one year since the terrorist attack against the population in Israel, with which I renewed my closeness. Let's not forget that there are still many hostages in Gaza, for whom I demand their immediate release. Since that day, the Middle East has been plunged into ever greater suffering, with devastating military actions that continue to affect the Palestinian population. This population is suffering greatly in Gaza and other territories. These are mostly innocent civilians, all human and who should receive all the necessary humanitarian assistance. I call for an immediate ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon. We pray for the Lebanese, especially the residents of the South, forced to leave their villages. All nations have the right to exist in peace and security, and their territories must not be attacked or occupied, sovereignty must be respected and guaranteed through dialogue and peace, not hatred and war ," he said.
