Immigration officers began cracking down on delivery drivers, a significant portion of whom are immigrants without permission to reside in the United Kingdom.

Some asylum seekers were working illegally for "Just Eat", a food delivery company, while police seized phones and bicycles.

The operation lasted several hours and led to a number of arrests for illegal work and violating parole conditions.

One of the delivery drivers, whose mobile phone was confiscated by an officer, denied working for a food company before the phone rang, and the officer asked: "Why is Deliveroo calling you now?"

The bosses of the companies, Just Eat and Uber Eats, were last night escorted to the Ministry of the Interior to be punished. They have now pledged to expel illegal employees from their ranks.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper vowed to step up checks. The food giants were read the riot act just as Immigration Offices carried out their first raid outside the Thistle City Barbican hotel in London.

More than 20 police officers in vests got out of cars without license plates to pounce on the migrants as they returned from their shift.

Officers were confronted by at least ten men, two of whom were seen carrying branded grocery bags on bicycles.
