Another round of clashes has been recorded between Donald Trump and Elon Musk, as the US president suggested that the Tesla tycoon's government subsidies and contracts could be put at risk.
"Elon may have received more subsidies than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and go back home to South Africa," Trump wrote on his Truth Social website.
Trump went on to suggest that the DOGE initiative, or Department of Government Efficiency, which Musk played a key role in creating, could be turned against the world's richest man.
"Enough with rocket launches, satellites, or electric car manufacturing, and our country would save a fortune. Maybe we should ask the Department of Health to take a good, careful look at this?" the president wrote.
According to an estimate by the Washington Post, Musk and his businesses have received at least $38 billion in government contracts, loans, subsidies and tax credits over the years.
Trump and Musk started the year with mutual appreciation and for months appeared to be close friends, before the relationship soured last month over differences over government debt.
Relations between the two have now broken down and they occasionally clash on social media with mutual accusations and warnings.
In response, Musk wrote on his social media platform, X: "I'm literally saying stop it all. Now."
The latest social media debate comes after Musk's renewed criticism of Trump's "big, beautiful bill," which is currently struggling to gain enough Republican support to pass the Senate.
Musk says the bill will increase the U.S. national debt. On Monday, he threatened to impeach lawmakers who campaigned on deficit reduction but vote for him. He has also floated the idea of forming a new party if the bill passes.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that the bill will increase federal deficits by about $2.4 trillion over the next decade.
