United States President Donald Trump said today that the US could share control of the Strait of Hormuz with Iran and suggested that regime change in Tehran "has already happened."
Trump told reporters that the talks between the two sides took place on Sunday and involved the highest levels of Iranian leadership. He said he had not received a direct signal from Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, adding that he did not know if he was alive.
“Maybe me and the Ayatollah, whoever he is, or the next Ayatollah,” Trump said, hinting that a “very serious regime change” was expected in Iran. He then declared that the US had “eliminated everything that had to be eliminated in Iran, including the leaders.”
A source quoted by The Jerusalem Post said that the speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, is leading the talks with the United States. Trump said the American side is negotiating with what he considers “the most respected man and leader,” while describing the Iranian representatives as “very reasonable” and “very stable.”
According to a source familiar with the developments, quoted by The Washington Post, intermediary countries are trying to organize a meeting this week in Islamabad between senior American and Iranian officials.
Trump said there was "a real possibility" of reaching a deal. He added that the talks were being led by his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law, and that the contacts had begun Saturday evening.
"We've had very strong talks. We'll see where they go. There are major points of agreement, on almost all issues," Trump said, adding that he had given the parties "five days."
The US president said the issue of Iran's nuclear program was also included in the talks. He reiterated his stance on "zero enrichment" by Iran and demanded the surrender of the enriched uranium that Tehran currently possesses.
Trump described the Iranian approach as an attempt to "close" the issue and said the negotiations represent "another opportunity" for Iran to stop threatening the U.S. He said it would make the world "a lot safer soon."
"This time, Iran is serious," Trump said.
