The USS Gerald R. Ford, an aircraft carrier that had been involved in US operations against Iran before the fire, has arrived at Souda Bay, Crete, Greece, for maintenance and repairs after a fire broke out in the ship's laundry area, the US Navy said on Monday.
The ship, the Navy's most advanced carrier, remains fully mission-capable, the Navy said in a statement. CNN previously reported that the Ford was sailing to Souda Bay; a U.S. official said the Ford would remain there for "a short period." The Navy statement said the Ford will undergo "effective evaluation, repair and supply."
The military has said the fire was not combat-related. The Ford aircraft has been deployed since last June, initially to the Caribbean as part of military preparations due to tensions with Venezuela and now to the Middle East as part of the war with Iran.
According to USNI News, it could break the record for the longest aircraft carrier deployment since the Vietnam War if it continues to deploy through mid-April.
