Two people opened fire on the United States consulate in Toronto in an incident that Canadian police described as a matter of national security.
According to Toronto police, the incident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. (08:30 GMT) when two men approached the consulate building in the city's downtown area in a white SUV. They got out of the vehicle and fired several shots with a handgun into the building.
Toronto Deputy Police Chief Frank Barredo told reporters that there were people inside the consulate at the time of the attack, but the building is fortified and equipped with high security measures.
"The building is very secure and fortified. There are no injuries," Barredo said.
Canadian authorities are investigating the motive for the attack. Chief Superintendent Chris Leather of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said investigators are looking into all possibilities, including whether it was an act of terrorism.
"The fact whether it is a terrorist act will be determined by the investigation," he stated.
The incident comes at a time of heightened tensions. Last weekend, protests took place near the US consulate in Toronto against the US-Israeli war on Iran.
In recent days, shootings have also been reported at three synagogues in the Toronto area, although no injuries have been reported in these cases either.
