US officials describe the war as "perfectly organized chaos," while questions about civilian casualties remain unanswered.
At a recent press conference at the Pentagon, US officials signaled that military operations against Iran are expected to intensify in the coming days, writes 'Sky News'.
Pete Hegseth, who serves as the secretary of defense, said the next phase of operations would be "more intense" than so far. According to him, more fighter jets and bombers would be involved in the air strikes.
The Army's Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Caine, said current targets include hitting weapons production facilities in Iran, as well as military research and development centers. He added that operations are also moving closer to structures from which attacks are carried out on the ground.
General Caine also honored the eight American service members who have lost their lives in the conflict and the thousands more who are engaged in operations. He described the military campaign as “perfectly organized chaos.”
Asked if Iranian counterattacks have been stronger than expected, Caine replied that Iranian forces are resisting, but according to him they are no more dangerous than anticipated.
During the briefing, several reporters raised questions about an airstrike last week on a girls’ school in Iran that reportedly killed more than 150 people, including many schoolgirls. Hegseth and Caine did not directly answer those questions. Hegseth stated generally that Iran, according to U.S. assessments, has placed military equipment in civilian areas, including schools, and has carried out attacks from civilian infrastructure.
President Donald Trump later said that a Tomahawk missile was used in one of the attacks. He also suggested that the missile was Iranian, although these missiles are manufactured and operated by the United States.
Regarding the duration of the conflict, Hegseth said that the final decision lies with the US president. He stressed that the operation does not have a set deadline, but added that it is not intended to be an endless war. According to him, the president determines the ultimate objectives and the moment when they are considered achieved.
