Iran has told mediators that it is not ready to hold meetings with US officials in Islamabad in the coming days...
Iran has rejected a US proposal for a temporary 48-hour ceasefire, the semi-official Fars news agency reported. An unidentified source quoted by Fars said the US proposal was delivered on Wednesday through an unnamed “friendly” third country, but Tehran has rejected it. According to the source, Iran’s response was not in writing, but expressed “on the ground” with operations continuing.
The rejection comes as mediation efforts continue, but the parties’ positions remain far apart. The Wall Street Journal reports that Iran has told mediators that it is not willing to meet with US officials in Islamabad in the coming days. Earlier this week, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made it clear that Tehran does not accept a temporary ceasefire, but only seeks a permanent and complete end to the war across the region. He stressed that any solution must include concrete guarantees against new attacks and compensation for damages caused.
Iran has counter-proposed its own conditions for any agreement, including, among others: An end to aggression by the enemy; Strong guarantees to prevent a recurrence of war; Payment of war reparations; Recognition of Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
This strong position by Tehran comes amid high tensions in the Middle East, where conflicts with Israel and the US have caused mutual shocks and concerns about further destabilization of the region and the impact on global energy markets.
While diplomatic efforts continue through indirect channels, including the possibility of Pakistan as a mediator, signals from both sides indicate that a quick ceasefire remains difficult without the fulfillment of essential conditions.
The situation has become even more difficult for the administration of President Donald Trump after the downing of a US fighter jet (F-15E Strike Eagle) over Iranian territory today. Iran claims to have shot down the plane and has issued a bounty for the capture of the pilots, while the US has launched a search and rescue operation for the crew. The fate of one of the crew members remains unclear./ Pamphlet
