US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Beijing. This is the highest level visit to China since his predecessor made in 2018.
Relations between the two countries are not particularly relaxed due to various issues, such as the Taiwan issue and the war in Ukraine.
The visit comes after Blinken postponed the trip in February because of a suspected Chinese spy balloon that flew over US airspace, according to foreign media. Blinken is the highest-ranking US government official to visit China since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021.
During his stay until Monday, he is expected to meet with Foreign Minister Qin Gang, Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi and possibly President Xi Jinping, seeking to establish open and stable channels of communication to ensure that the strategic rivalry between the two countries don't go into conflict.
