Russian President Vladimir Putin held separate phone calls with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, following a series of Israeli airstrikes on Iranian territory.
According to a statement from the Kremlin, Putin condemned Israel's actions, calling them a violation of the United Nations Charter and international law.
He expressed condolences for the victims and stressed Russia's willingness to mediate between the two sides to avoid further escalation of the conflict.
Putin told the Iranian president that Moscow supports a peaceful resolution of the situation surrounding Iran's nuclear program and has proposed concrete initiatives to reach a mutually acceptable agreement.
Russia will “continue to promote a reduction in tensions between Iran and Israel,” the Kremlin wrote. Putin will also maintain “close contact” with authorities in both countries “with a view to resolving the current situation.”
In his conversation with Prime Minister Netanyahu, the Russian president underlined the importance of resuming negotiations and stressed that any issue related to Iran's nuclear program should be resolved only through political and diplomatic means.
He added that he would maintain close contact with both sides to help reduce tensions, warning that the situation has the potential for catastrophic consequences for the region and expressing readiness to offer mediation in order to prevent further escalation," the Kremlin said in a statement posted on its website.
Meanwhile, Konstantin Kosachev, deputy speaker of the upper house of the Russian parliament and chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, stated that Russia will support Iran.
He said that "Israel's actions cannot be justified from either a legal, political, military or moral point of view" and called for a united stance by the international community to prevent a possible full-scale war.
