Three officers were killed and two others remain in critical but stable condition after a shooting Wednesday afternoon in a rural area of central Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State Police Col. Christopher Paris said.
The perpetrator was killed after being shot by police, officials said.
The incident appears to have occurred while officers were executing a court order, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.
The incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m., when 911 operators received calls about the incident in North Codorus Township in central Pennsylvania, about 2 1/2 hours west of Philadelphia.
Police were dispatched to Haar Road in Spring Grove, a largely agricultural neighborhood of York County filled with small barns and large farmland.
A medical helicopter was seen in one of the area's grassy fields, surrounded by the winding road illuminated by the flashing lights of several fire engines, police cars and ambulances.
State and county officials have not yet provided additional information about how the incident occurred.
York County Chief Medical Examiner Pamela Gay previously told CNN that her office responded to the incident, but declined to provide details.
The FBI, along with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are on the scene supporting local authorities, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a post on X.
"Violence against law enforcement is a scourge on our society and never acceptable. Pray for the officers involved," Bondi added.
