Sonja Biserko: Vucic is bankrupt, the US and Germany are allowing him to spread

Sonja Biserko, head of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Belgrade, told the German newspaper, Die Tageszeitung, that the West prioritizes pushing back Russian influence in the region and that it wants the conflicts in the Balkans to be resolved by the end of the year.

With this, Biserko explains what he says is a change in the attitude of the United States and Germany towards Serbia and thus answers the question "why is the United States showing sympathy for Vučić?".

The pressure on the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, will increase, she says.

"The aim now is obviously to repel Russian influence in the region. This takes priority. American ambassadors from the region recently met in Tirana and discussed this. The logic behind this policy is based on the belief that there is not much time left. The conflicts in Europe and above all in the Balkans must be resolved by the end of the year, because conflicts elsewhere are getting bigger and bigger. There are big challenges around the world", said Biserko.

The deployment of the Serbian army on the border with Kosovo "is nothing new", she says.

"But it is clear to all observers that Vucic has now tried again to heat up the conflict in Kosovo."

In the politics of this time, Biserko says that "there are no more political guarantees for human rights".

She says that democratic rights "do not play a role today, they are not a priority. Security policy is now important, strategic interests are in the first place, democratic values are no longer important".

"This means that the pressure on Kosovo and Prime Minister Albin Kurti will increase. The Academy of Sciences of Serbia has recently raised the thesis that a Serbian entity should be created in Kosovo. This is the only way to meet Brussels' demands for EU integration," she said.

"For Vučić, this means postponing with all his might the association of municipalities with a Serbian majority. Kurt doesn't want that, he's sticking to the original European path. "Serbian municipalities have extensive self-governing rights in the existing state and, in addition to the seats of elected representatives, 10 seats in the country's parliament," added Biserko.

She said that Vučić is trying to prevent the Serbs from integrating and thus pushing them to leave the institutions and boycott the elections.

"This policy used to be disgusting, but now the US allows it," said Biserko.

"The United States and Germany want to implement this policy despite the fact that Aleksandar Vucic is politically and financially bankrupt. Serbia ranks last in terms of economic growth in the region, regardless of free energy from Russia," she emphasized.
