Pakistan announced on Monday that it has arrested 12 suspected traffickers for last week's sinking of a migrant boat off the coast of Greece.
Pakistan has confirmed that only 12 Pakistanis died when a fishing boat said to be carrying around 750 men, women and children capsized in the Mediterranean, five days after leaving Libya for Italy.
But Pakistani media reported on Sunday that around 300 Pakistanis had lost their lives in the incident.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared Monday a day of national mourning in honor of Pakistanis who did not survive the tragedy.
Greek officials said 104 people were rescued from the boat and 78 bodies were pulled from the sea.
Thousands of mostly young Pakistanis, seeking a better life in Europe, pay smugglers for their journey across the Mediterranean, which too often ends in tragedy./VOA
