The so-called "cryptocurrency king", Hyeong Do Kwon, and his partner Hon Chang Joon, have been sentenced to 4 months in prison by the Basic Court in Podgorica, with 4 months in prison each, for forging travel documents.
South Korea and the United States are seeking their extradition, due to cryptocurrency scams worth tens of billions of euros.
They were arrested on March 23 at Podgorica airport, from where they tried to take a private plane to Dubai, with illegal passports. They have been using Costa Rican passports, but during the investigation, they were also found to have documents from South Korea and Belgium.
At the hearing, Hyeong Do Kwon and Hon Chang Joon said they applied for Costa Rican passports in Singapore through an agency there, and were then provided with them after the procedure was completed.
Their arrest has brought storms in Montenegro, as the leader of the largest party in the country, the Party for European Integration of President Jakov Milatovic, is suspected of being involved in a network.
Milojko Spajic, the head of PES has been denounced by the Montenegrin media as the person who was protecting the Korean De Kwon.
