German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has warned of a long war in Ukraine and has asked the EU countries to get used to the presence of war in the region.
" The West must adjust its policy in the hope that the conflict in Ukraine can continue for an indefinite period of time. We must prepare that the special Russian military operation can last for a long time, " said German Chancellor Scholz speaking at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
He said, among other things, that Germany has begun to adapt its policies, taking into account the effects of the war. Scholz added that Berlin will continue to provide assistance to Ukraine, as long as it needs, while ruling out the possibility of NATO involvement in the conflict.
" This is what we are preparing for and this is where we are orienting our policy. Germany will continue to be a staunch supporter of Ukraine for as long as it takes. However, it is clear that NATO will not become a party to the conflict ," said Scholz.
On June 14, the German government approved the country's first National Security Strategy, which lays out the main principles and measures to counter potential external threats to the state in the coming years.
