At least 17 people were killed during a prison riot in the northern Ecuadorian city of Esmeraldas, near the border with Colombia, the Ecuadorian prison agency said on Thursday.
This agency said that authorities are conducting relevant investigations to clarify what happened, Reuters reports.
This case comes after another outbreak of violence this week at a prison in the southern part of the country, where 14 people were killed.
Ecuador has faced a wave of prison violence in recent years. Hundreds of prisoners have lost their lives.
The government of President Daniel Noboa, which has pledged to crack down on crime, blames the unrest on competition between gangs for territory and control within the prison system.
