The trade war between the US and China looks set to escalate further. Neither side is showing any signs of backing down, and citizens, businesses, and large corporations are paying the price.
Goods coming from China to the United States are now subject to a tariff of at least 145%, the White House clarified today, indicating that a 25 percent tariff has been added.
The 125% "reciprocal" tariff announced yesterday on China by President Donald Trump comes on top of the 20% tariff that had already been in effect. It was not clear yesterday whether the tariffs were additional. The White House said Thursday that they are.
Trump has linked that 20% tariff to illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl into the US, in which he has accused China of playing a role.
In addition, Trump also increased tariffs on goods less than $800 coming from China to 120% as of May 2.
