China has sharply criticized statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who claimed that Beijing knew that Russia had recruited Chinese citizens to fight alongside Russian troops in Ukraine.
China has described them as "irresponsible statements," while Zelensky said that Kiev has information about 155 Chinese citizens who are helping Moscow in its military operation in Ukraine.
The statements followed an announcement by the Ukrainian military, which said it had captured two Chinese soldiers in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. At the same time, the Ukrainian president said with certainty that China is aware that dozens of its citizens have been recruited by Russia to fight on Ukrainian soil.
"We recommend that relevant parties have a fair and reasonable view of China's role and not make irresponsible statements," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said today.
Lin was answering a question about Zelensky's statements during a press conference.
"The Chinese government always urges its citizens to stay away from conflict zones" and "especially to avoid participating in military operations in any part of the world ," Lin Jian stressed.
"I want to remind you that China is neither responsible for the Ukrainian crisis nor does it participate in it. We are ardent supporters and actively promote a peaceful solution," he added.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, China calls for the territorial integrity of all countries to be respected, implying that Ukraine is also involved and appears as a neutral country in the conflict, emphasizing that it can help find a peaceful solution.
Beijing has never publicly condemned Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, and since the outbreak of the war in February 2022, it has strengthened its economic, political, and military relations with Russia.
Russian authorities are "drawing other countries into the war."
"I believe that now they are drawing China into this war," Zelensky told a group of journalists yesterday. "This is a deliberate step towards expanding the war," he added, noting that it proves that Moscow wants "the fighting to drag on."
