Former US President Barack Obama commented on recent developments in the American political scene during an interview published on Saturday, indirectly reacting to a racist video shared on social media by President Donald Trump.

In the 47-minute podcast, host Brian Tyler Cohen asked Obama about the level of public debate in the United States, which he described as deteriorating. He also mentioned the White House's claims that immigrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are considered domestic terrorists, as well as the fact that Trump had released an image of Obama in the body of a monkey.

Obama did not mention Trump by name in his responses, but emphasized that the majority of American citizens find such behavior disturbing.

He acknowledged that such content attracts attention and creates distraction, but added that public discourse has lost its previous standards of ethics and correctness in the exercise of public functions.

"And what's true is that there doesn't seem to be any shame about it among people who used to think you had to have some kind of etiquette and a sense of propriety and respect for the office, right? That's been lost," he said, without mentioning Trump by name in his response.

He also spoke about the role of social media and television, describing them as spaces dominated by a spectacular approach that, according to him, has replaced the sense of institutional responsibility.

During the interview, Obama also addressed other topics, including peaceful protests against immigration operations, the redistricting process and the project of his presidential library, which is expected to open in Chicago next year.
