President Donald Trump said today he was "surprised" and "disappointed" by recent Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, but declined to attack President Vladimir Putin in front of reporters.
"We were going to solve a problem, and then, all of a sudden, missiles were fired at several cities and people were killed. I saw things that I was surprised by, and I don't like to be surprised, so I'm very disappointed, " Trump said, avoiding a direct answer when asked whether he now sees Putin as the good guy or the bad guy.
Trump continued to express concern about the human toll of the conflict. When asked how his administration was handling “a very stubborn Vladimir Putin,” Trump quickly interjected and included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the characterization.
"And Zelensky too ," he said.
Trump spoke with Putin by phone last week, and the Russian leader reportedly pledged to draft and send a “peace memorandum” detailing Russia’s terms for a ceasefire in Ukraine, according to a U.S. official and a White House source familiar with the matter. However, more than a week after the call, the U.S. has yet to receive the promised document, the sources said.
In response to the ongoing violence, Trump is now considering additional sanctions on Moscow, according to individuals familiar with the situation, while expressing his frustration with the stalled peace process.
