Iran wants to make a deal with the US, Donald Trump said today, confirming that he has given Tehran an ultimatum.
"I can tell you they want to make a deal," the US president told reporters in the Oval Office. When asked if he had given the Iranians a deadline, Trump said yes, without giving further details about the deadline.
"If the negotiations are fair and equal, the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to participate in them," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had previously stated, assuring, in line with Iran's usual tactic, that his country has never sought to acquire nuclear weapons.
However, he added that his country's defense and missile capabilities "will never be subject to negotiations."
"The security of the Iranian people does not concern anyone else," he stressed, clarifying that no meeting with the US is planned at this stage.
The Iranian minister made these statements from Istanbul, during his first official visit abroad since the wave of protests bled into his country, and with Turkey wanting to play a role that would facilitate dialogue between the two hostile countries.
At the same time today, the United States announced sanctions against several Iranian officials, including Interior Minister Eskandhar Momeni, following the bloody suppression of protests in Iran in recent weeks.
