US President Donald Trump declared that the United States was very close to launching a new attack on Iran, stressing that the decision was suspended at the last moments during ongoing negotiations.
During a statement to the media in Washington, where he also spoke about the project for the new ceremonial hall at the White House, Trump focused on tensions with Iran and the Iranian nuclear program.
" Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. They are begging for a deal, but we may have to give them another big blow. I'm not sure yet, we'll know very soon ," he declared.
Asked how close the US was to striking Iran the day before, Trump replied: " I was an hour away. The attack would have happened now ."
The US president also accused Democrats of obstructing his negotiating efforts with Tehran, while stressing that his administration is working closely with Gulf countries during the diplomatic process.
Trump argued that the Iranian nuclear threat was serious before the US intervention, claiming that there was a risk that tensions would lead to global consequences. At one point, he even said he had concerns about the safety of American cities like Los Angeles.
However, his critics and former US officials argue that previous administrations have succeeded in deterring Iran from developing nuclear weapons through diplomacy and international agreements.
In the same public appearance, Trump also spoke about the new White House stateroom, calling it his “gift to the United States.” He said the project is not being built for personal use, as his term ends soon after the building is completed, but “for future presidents and for decades to come.”
