Trump: I am informed that executions in Iran have stopped
Donald Trump

Donald Trump, speaking from the Oval Office, said that the US has been informed that executions in Iran have stopped and that there are no plans for executions.

"I just got this information," the US president said. He added that many people have been talking over the last two days that today will be execution day.

According to US officials cited by the New York Times, the Pentagon has presented President Donald Trump with several options for potential targets in Iran, including its nuclear program.

Erfan Soltani was not executed today. Relatives of 26-year-old Erfan Soltani, who was arrested last week, said that despite the postponement, the execution could happen at any time.

The 26-year-old was reportedly arrested last Thursday. Norwegian human rights group Hengaw said he was being held in Kezel Hesar prison and that "the possibility of his execution within the next few hours is very high."

The US State Department said Soltani's death would be the first execution of a protester since the protests, but "not the last".

Later, Donald Trump vowed to take "very strong measures" if the regime in Tehran continues with the execution of protesters, at a time when a possible US military action in Iran is imminent.

"If they hang them, you'll see what happens," the US president told CBS News on Tuesday night. He added that "if they want to protest, that's one thing. When they start killing thousands of people, and now you're talking to me about hanging them, we'll see how it turns out for them. It's not going to turn out well for them."

Erfan would become the first person to be executed for participating in the protests, which have rocked Iran and left hundreds of innocent citizens dead.

Iranian officials have hinted that speedy trials and executions are expected for those arrested in the nationwide protests, while the Islamic Republic has promised a "decisive response" if the US or Israel intervene in the domestic unrest.

Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, repeated the Iranian claims without providing evidence, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

A doctor told Radio Free Europe that security forces attacked hospitals and began shooting wounded protesters at close range to "finally kill them." "They killed many [protesters], arrested many more, and many are trying to escape," the doctor said, adding, "The situation is very bad."
